COACH STEVE'S HITTING PHILOSOPHY

ELITE HITTERSARE BUILT 50/50.

Same game. Different approach. A system to help hitters think better, move better, and perform when it matters most, because hitting isn't just a swing. It's a decision, a mindset, and an execution.

01 / THE 50/50 SYSTEM

NECK UP SETS THEASSIGNMENT. NECK DOWNEXECUTES IT.

Hitting is a combination of what goes on between your ears and what you do with your body. You need both. One without the other doesn't work.

The best hitters aren't just talented or athletic. They combine a clear plan with a movement pattern that lets them execute when it's time.

NECK UP

The decision engine

  • Vision
  • Pitch Recognition
  • Approach
  • Count Awareness
  • Situational IQ
  • Confidence
  • Adjustments
  • Game Awareness

NECK DOWN

The physical engine

  • Mechanics
  • Timing
  • Balance
  • Sequencing
  • Barrel Control
  • Bat Speed
  • Direction
  • Output Quality

IN ONE COUNT

2-0 count → hunt your pitch → recognize it early → execute → damage. The decision side is hitting IQ: reading the pitch, knowing the count, and choosing when to attack.

  1. 01THINK CLEARER
  2. 02MOVE BETTER
  3. 03DECIDE BETTER
  4. 04HIT CONSISTENTLY
Coach Steve

“Mechanics matter. But they only matter if they translate to game day.”

COACH STEVE

02 / BEYOND THE CAGE

A BEAUTIFUL SWINGCAN STILL PRODUCEBAD AT-BATS.

A player can look great in the cage and still struggle in the game. Game speed, pitch movement, situations, and pressure reveal the truth. If a hitter can't recognize the pitch, understand the count, know what he's hunting, or adjust after getting beat, the swing never gets a real chance to work.

  • CAGE HITTER

    “My swing looks good.”

  • COMPLETE HITTER

“I see it early and execute it.”

03 / THE 3-STEP PROCESS

DON'T SEPARATE THE SWINGFROM THE GAME.

  1. See It

Pick up the ball early. Recognize speed, shape, and location.

  2. Decide It

Know the count, the situation, and the pitch you're hunting — or taking.

  3. Execute It

Let the physical side do what it's trained to do — with intent and a clear plan.

04 / THE SWING

HITTING IS NOT ASWING CONTEST.

The pitcher doesn't care how good your swing looks. He cares if you can recognize his pitch, make a decision, and put a good swing on it. A swing that looks great in slow motion means nothing if it doesn't work in the game.

I don't try to create the same swing for every player. There are fundamentals almost every good hitter shares, but there isn't one perfect-looking swing. Every hitter is different: body, strength, mobility, timing, and personality. The goal is a repeatable movement pattern that lets him see the ball, adjust, and do damage.

05 / THE TOOL

We work on posture, balance, sequencing, loading the rear hip, direction, and barrel control. But mechanics are a tool, not the end goal. The real question is:

Does this help the hitter see the ball better, get on time more consistently, adjust to different pitches, and hit the ball harder in games?

Mechanics give a hitter the ability to execute. The mental side tells him when, where, and why to execute it.

If it doesn't transfer, it isn't finished. That's training that translates to game day.

06 / PITCH RECOGNITION

WIN THE PITCHBEFORE YOU SWING.

Elite hitters win the pitch in the first 12–18 feet. Before you ever swing, you've already made several decisions:

  1. 01

    See It

    Pick up the baseball early.

  2. 02

    Recognize It

    Fastball? Breaking ball? Changeup?

  3. 03

    Read It

    Where is it headed?

  4. 04

    Decide

Is this the pitch I'm hunting?

  5. 05

    Commit

    Yes or no.

  6. 06

    Execute

    Now let it go.

The earlier you identify and process the pitch, the easier it is to get a good swing off.

07 / SITUATIONAL HITTING

APPROACH CHANGESTHE SWING.

Your approach should change based on the count, the pitcher, and the situation. The mental side tells the physical side what job it has to perform. That's the 50/50 System in real baseball.

  • 2-0 · Hunt

Get your pitch. Don't help the pitcher.

  • 0-2 · Protect

Expand the zone. Get closer. Choke up if needed. Battle, but stay aggressive.

  • Runner on Second

Use the middle of the field. Understand how they're pitching you.

  • Runner on Third

Get the run home. Prioritize contact and direction.

08 / COMPETITIVE PRACTICE

BUILT FOR CHAOS,NOT PRETTY BP.

My training is designed to be one step removed from competition. We don't just take perfect BP.

  • High velocity
  • Breaking balls and change of speeds
  • Pitch recognition
  • Decision drills
  • Situational and count-based rounds
  • Two-strike work
  • Machines
  • Variable timing
  • Competition

The cage isn't supposed to produce the prettiest BP session. It's supposed to prepare the hitter for chaos, so the game slows down.

09 / PROCESS OVER OUTCOME

FAILURE IS PART OF HITTING.

3 hits in 10 at-bats can make you an excellent hitter. A strikeout doesn't automatically mean a bad at-bat, and a hit doesn't always mean a good one. We focus on:

  • Quality decisions
  • Pitch selection
  • Hard contact
  • Competitive at-bats
  • Adjustments
  • Confidence
  • Execution of the plan

PROCESS OVER OUTCOME.

10 / THE 50/50 SYSTEM IN ONE AT-BAT

COUNT: 2-0.

NECK UP

  • Knows the count
  • Knows the pitcher has to challenge him
  • Decides what pitch and location he wants
  • Refuses to chase a pitcher's pitch

NECK DOWN

  • Gets ready early
  • Loads properly
  • Maintains posture
  • Sequences correctly
  • Controls the barrel
  • Stays adjustable

Pitch: fastball outside corner. Not his pitch. Take.

Now 2-1. Next pitch: middle.

He recognizes it, commits, and drives it to the gap.

That's the 50/50 System.

IT'S NOT JUST A SYSTEM

DON'T JUST BUILD ABETTER SWING. BUILD ABETTER HITTER.

NECK UP

See it, decide it, own the count

NECK DOWN

A swing that holds up at game speed

GAME DAY

Both halves working together
