The Method · A Parent's Guide
Most programs obsess over the swing. Elite performance is found in the mind. The Coach Steve Hitting System is built on an uncompromising truth: hitting is half mechanics — sequencing, barrel control, the body — and half mental — vision, awareness, decision-making, approach. The "neck up" essentials are where great hitters separate themselves from the pack.
00 / The Foundation
Modern instruction is failing young athletes by over-teaching mechanics while ignoring the mental game. In this system, we recognize that mechanics exist solely to support the approach. They do not lead it.
A hitter who can swing beautifully but cannot read a pitch, sense the count, or adjust mid-at-bat will fail in games. A hitter who sees the game clearly will find a way to compete — even with a B-grade swing. We teach both. We refuse to teach only one.
Hitting IQ "The standard coach focuses on fixing the swing. The Coach Steve System focuses on improving the hitter. Those are not the same thing."
01 / The Pillars
Every hitter we develop is built on these three. Skip one and the system collapses.
Pillar One
A hitter cannot adjust to what they cannot see. Vision is the primary driver of the entire system — it is not a passive act, it is an aggressive skill. Elite hitters process pitch speed, spin, and zone location in real time, before the body decides anything.
Pillar Two
Most 'swing flaws' parents see are actually setup failures. An at-bat is won or lost before the pitcher even moves. An inch of difference in how a player stands relative to the plate determines whether they can cover all 17 inches of the strike zone. Fixing the setup often cleans up a swing without ever needing a mechanical drill.
Pillar Three
Elite hitters are investigators, not guessers. They treat every pitch as data. They read the pitcher's pattern, the defense's alignment, the count, the inning. By the time they step into the box, they already know what's coming.
02 / The Tool
The single most-skipped fundamental in youth hitting. Three steps. Sixty seconds. Do this with your player at home before the next session.
Step One · Measure
Have the player stand in the batter's box and lay their bat flat on the ground, pointing toward home plate.
Step Two · Align
Adjust their position in the box until the tip of the barrel touches the outside edge of the plate, while the knob of the bat remains on the ground inside the box.
Step Three · Lock In
That position is their reference point for every at-bat. They now have the angles to cover the outside corner without being jammed inside.
Hitting IQ "Players who don't pass this check are guessing on every outside pitch. They get jammed on inside pitches because they're trying to cover what they can't reach. The setup is the at-bat — it just hasn't happened yet."
03 / The Process
Elite hitters run this list before every at-bat. Most youth hitters run none of it. This is what separates them — not bat speed.
The body cannot be faster than the brain. If the brain is asking these questions, the body is ready. If it isn't, the swing is a guess.
Q1 · The Pitcher's Pattern
How did he get me out last time? How is he attacking my teammates? What does he throw when he needs a strike?
Q2 · Defensive Alignment
Are the outfielders deep or shallow? Is the infield in or back? Where is the play if I hit it on the ground? Where is the gap if I hit it in the air?
Q3 · The Count
What does the pitcher need to throw right now? What can I afford to take? What can I refuse to chase? Every count changes the math.
04 / By Age
We don't teach an 8-year-old like a 16-year-old. The system grows with the player.
Ages 8 — 10
Basic Pitch Recognition
Is it a strike or a ball? That's the entire mental game at this age. Plus athletic body positions and connection to the ground. We don't overload them — we build the eye.
Ages 11 — 13
Zone Awareness + Situational Hitting
Now they can map the strike zone. Now they can hit a ground ball to the right side with a runner on third. Approach work begins. The mental engine starts running.
Ages 14 — 18
Pitcher Patterns + Sequencing
Full advanced situational awareness. Reading the pitcher's tunnels. Counting their pitches. Understanding when to take, when to attack, when to spoil. Base open or closed. The full game.
05 / Under Pressure
With two strikes, the goal shifts from damage to battle. This requires a total shift — physical and mental. Both halves change at once.
Neck Down
Choke Up
Increases barrel control and shortens the lever for quicker reactions.
Shorten the Path
Eliminate extra movement to create a direct line to the ball.
Stay Balanced
Athletic posture through contact. No lunging, no falling off.
Neck Up
Expand the Zone
Protect the plate by looking a ball's width wider on each side. Anything close, you're swinging.
See It Deeper
Let the ball travel further before committing. Improves recognition of spin and speed when you need it most.
Compete
Refuse to give away at-bats. Foul off the unhittable. Make the pitcher work.
06 / A Warning
Blast Motion. Rapsodo. HitTrax. We use them — daily. But we never let them lead.
These are real, useful, repeatable measurements. We track them, we train them, we publish the benchmarks.
What Tech Cannot Measure
A 65 mph bat speed in the cage means nothing if the player swings at the wrong pitch. A perfect attack angle means nothing if they can't read spin. Use technology as a measurement tool — never let a data point override a player's development in awareness and decision-making.
The Bottom Line
The Standard Coach
Creates cage hitters — players who look great in practice and disappear in games.
The Coach Steve System
Creates adjustment hitters — players who compete in any environment, any count, any situation.
Ready?
If this system describes the kind of player you want your hitter to become, the next step is a 15-minute call. No commitment. Real conversation about your kid.
