Hitting flaws & fixes

Poor Separation

The lower body, torso, and hands move together without creating stretch between the pelvis and upper body at launch.

Definition

Poor separation occurs when the pelvis, torso, hands, and barrel move together without creating usable stretch at launch. The goal is not maximum separation; it is enough independent movement to create force while preserving adjustability.

Recognize the pattern

What to look for

  • Hands drift forward with the stride
  • Hips and shoulders open simultaneously
  • Swing appears one-piece or pushy
  • Limited rotational acceleration
  • Hitter must commit early to generate bat speed

Make the adjustment

Fix strategy

Separate the gather, stride, and turn during practice, then blend them back to game tempo. Use pauses, resistance, offset positions, and controlled sequencing progressions.

  • Land stretched, not tense
  • Lower half creates, upper half delivers
  • Gather, separate, turn

Test the change

Check the improvement

  • Hands remain organized as the body gains ground
  • Pelvis begins rotation before the torso
  • Improved adjustability after landing
  • Greater rotational acceleration without extra effort

More detail

Likely Causes
  • Rushed load and stride
  • No scapular resistance
  • Poor rear-hip loading
  • Hands tied too closely to torso movement
  • Lack of mobility or body awareness
Blast Motion Indicators

Monitor Rotational Acceleration, Early Connection, Time to Contact, Bat Speed, and swing-to-swing consistency.
