Hitting flaws & fixes

Pulling Off

The front shoulder, head, or torso leaves the ball early, causing the barrel to cut across the zone and reducing plate coverage.

Definition

Pulling off occurs when the front shoulder, head, or torso leaves the ball before the barrel has completed its work through the hitting zone. Rotation is necessary; the problem is rotation without direction, posture, or pitch tracking.

Recognize the pattern

What to look for

  • Front shoulder flies open early
  • Head turns away from contact
  • Barrel cuts across the zone
  • Outer-half pitches are pulled weakly or missed
  • Contact quality drops as pitch location moves away

Make the adjustment

Fix strategy

Restore direction through the middle of the field while allowing aggressive rotation. Use opposite-field contact points, directional targets, offset toss, and constraints that keep the hitter connected to the pitch.

Hitting IQ

Turn through the ball, not away from it

Test the change

Check the improvement

  • Head remains organized through contact
  • Better coverage of the outer half
  • Line-drive flight through center and opposite field
  • Front side opens as part of the sequence, not before it

More detail

Likely Causes
  • Pull-side outcome intent
  • Early torso rotation
  • Poor visual tracking
  • Stride direction away from the plate
  • Lack of space for the hands and barrel
