Foundations: Posture and Hip Hinge

What this drill helps fix

This drill addresses tall posture syndrome in hitters — specifically those who maintain an upright, vertical stance through their stride and into launch position.

Why fixing this matters

Proper hip hinge at launch position is fundamental to swing mechanics. It prevents pulling off the ball because a tall posture makes it harder to stay through the ball and maintain proper connection through contact. It also enables efficient rotation. A bent-over position with the hips hinged creates the proper axis for rotational power, while standing tall forces compensations that leak energy. The hip hinge improves bat path by creating a slight forward tilt that helps produce a flatter, more efficient swing plane instead of a steep, chopping motion. It also generates more power by properly engaging the posterior chain, including the glutes and hamstrings, and allowing hitters to use their strongest muscles to drive rotation. Whether a hitter starts narrow and tall or wide and hinged doesn’t matter. What matters is having the hip hinge established by launch position. The head should drop slightly during the stride as the hitter loads into proper posture, signaling that the hinge is happening correctly.
