Hitting flaws & fixes

Rolling Over

The top hand turns over before or through contact, redirecting the barrel across the ball and producing weak pull-side ground balls.

Definition

Rolling over occurs when the top hand rotates over the bottom hand too early, causing the barrel to leave the zone and work across the baseball before contact is complete. Natural hand turnover after extension is not the flaw.

Recognize the pattern

What to look for

  • Weak pull-side ground balls
  • Top hand turns palm-down before or at contact
  • Barrel exits the zone early
  • Contact occurs around the ball instead of through it
  • Hitter loses opposite-field authority

Make the adjustment

Fix strategy

Train deeper contact, palm-up/palm-down organization through impact, and extension through the middle of the field. Use directional ball flight and constrained one-hand work without manufacturing a rigid finish.

  • Let the ball travel
  • Palm up through contact
  • Drive it before you finish it

Test the change

Check the improvement

  • Hard line drives through the middle and opposite field
  • Barrel remains in the zone longer
  • Turnover occurs naturally after contact
  • Reduced weak pull-side ground balls

More detail

Likely Causes
  • Pull-side intent
  • Contact too far in front
  • Early shoulder rotation
  • Arm-dominant delivery
  • Poor barrel direction
