Why the Tee Is the Most Misused Tool in Baseball
The tee is an underrated diagnostic tool, but most hitters misuse it. Here is how to make every tee rep build real transfer instead of reinforcing bad habits.

The Trap of Mindless Tee Reps
Most hitters do one of two things on a tee: they smash baseballs without thinking, or they baby every swing trying to look pretty. Both miss the point entirely. Used wrong, two hundred tee swings will reinforce the exact habit you are trying to break.
The tee is a diagnostic tool. It removes the variable of the pitch so you can repeat a position, a path, or a feel, allowing a coach to see exactly what is happening. A two-tee setup can be used to check bat path and contact position during these reps. Used right, fifteen tee swings will teach a hitter more than two hundred soft-toss reps.
How to Use the Tee with Purpose
Every tee swing should answer a question. If it does not, it is just exercise. Here is how to get honest feedback from the tee:
- Isolate one checkpoint at a time (load, stride, bat path, contact), keeping it to one variable per round.
- Set the tee in different parts of the zone to expose where the swing breaks down, since the inside corner exposes where pull hitters cheat and the outside corner exposes pushers.
- Pair the tee with Blast Motion to see whether feel matches data, measuring bat speed, attack angle, and on-plane efficiency.
- Build the contact position before adding movement, progressing from static, to dynamic, then to live.
Mistakes That Kill Game Transfer
Building "tee confidence" with no transfer plan is the most common cage trap. Aimless contact will not translate when you face live pitching.
- Hitting until you are tired. The first 20 swings are the most honest; after that, fatigue teaches bad habits.
- Crushing balls without a target, which turns purposeful contact into empty exercise.
- Skipping front-side discipline, because a stationary ball makes it easy to drift forward.
- Relying on swings that look good on a tee but lack a clear plan to transfer into games.
Schedule an Initial Hitting Assessment
Every drill should assign a specific goal, a clear setup, and common mistakes to watch for so players are never guessing at home. If you want an objective look at your swing mechanics and real feedback on how your training transfers to the game, consider booking an Initial Hitting Assessment with me on Long Island. We will take a close look at your movement patterns and build purposeful work for your development.
THE NEXT STEP
WANT THIS DIAGNOSED ON YOUR HITTER?
Your hitter probably doesn’t need more random swings. They need to know what they’re actually trying to fix.
Start with an Initial Hitting Assessment — video analysis, swing and mechanics evaluation, approach and hitting-IQ review, and a clear development plan.
